The Popular Discovery Retro Run Returns To The Mother City
Get your sweat bands and spandex ready, because entries to the 2019 Discovery Retro Run, powered by KFM, are now open. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, 9 February 2019, the Discovery Retro Run will welcome thousands of participants to the Sea Point Promenade for a groovy 5 km or 8 km sunset run that will finish at the iconic Cape Town Stadium.
The successful 2018 edition of the 80s and 90s themed run saw over 4 000 participants take to the streets, and organisers envisage that this number will double in 2019.
The Discovery Retro Run is part of the annual Discovery Vitality Run Series which, together with the Discovery Triathlon World Cup Cape Town, kicks off two back-to-back months of fitness and healthy lifestyle events for the whole family in the Mother City.
Cape Town was voted South Africa’s most active city, according to recent results released by Discovery in its Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018, which measured six major cities across the country through looking at how active they are based on steps tracked, gym workouts and outdoor activities completed.
“Discovery aims to make communities healthier and get everyone more active because heart disease, strokes, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide,” says Iona Maclean, Head of Sponsorships and Experiential Marketing at Discovery. “Getting regular exercise, stopping smoking and eating healthier makes a significant difference in bringing these stats down and managing these diseases.”
“According to the Discovery index, The Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018, insufficient physical activity is a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases and is one of the leading risk factors for death worldwide. Globally, 1 in 4 adults are not active enough and 10% of people die from causes due to a lack of physical activity. Around half of South African adults live sedentary lifestyles – more than double the global average of 23% – making us one of the most inactive countries in the world. Through events such as the Discovery Retro Run we aim to get everyone - people of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels – moving and taking part in some way.”
As an added bonus, Discovery Vitality members will earn special bonus points for their participation in the Retro Run and Run Series, making it a must-do series for individuals and families hoping to boost their Vitality status and associated benefits.
The Retro Run will be the second event in the 2019 edition of the Western Cape Discovery Vitality Run Series. More details will be unveiled in Cape Town in the coming weeks.
The first Discovery Vitality Run Series was held in Johannesburg in 2017, with over 25 000 runners participating. Following its successful 2018 expansion to Cape Town, it is envisaged that the series will roll out to other cities in the near future.
