Press release -
Vitality and UNICEF come together to vaccinate one million children, but you have to run for it.
Wednesday 26 February 2020. Vitality and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) today announced a partnership that can positively impact the lives of a million children around the world. The partnership is built on Vitality’s shared-value model which links personal health to the health of society.
Vitality is encouraging South Africans to get active, run for their country – and while doing so, help vaccinate a child against diseases such as tuberculosis.
Dinesh Govender, Discovery Vitality Chief Executive, said: “The partnership with UNICEF gives South Africans an opportunity to help vaccinate a child by achieving their Vitality Running World Cup app weekly run goal. This is in conjunction with our first global initiative to help encourage 100 million people to get 20% more active by 2025.”.”
Tuberculosis has been identified by the World Health Organizationas one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide from a single infectious agent, above HIV and Aids.
Immunisation saves up to three million lives each year by protecting children against serious diseases. UNICEF’s immunisation programme also helps identify those children that have been left behind by the health system and can bring life-saving care to them.
UNICEF GLOBAL REPRESENTATIVE says: “We know that low immunisation levels among poor and marginalised children compromise gains made in all other areas of maternal and child health. This partnership will allow us to work towards closing that gap.”
The Vitality Running World Cup begins on the 5th of March 2020, and registrations are open.
