Liverpool Ladies to play Mamelodi Sundowns in pre-season South African tour

Johannesburg, 16 February 2016

Liverpool Ladies Football Club can today confirm the fixture for their pre-season tour of South Africa for the Discovery Liverpool Ladies FC Tour.

After playing the winners of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Ladies Challenge on Sunday 21 February, the Reds will face Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC in a friendly match on Wednesday 24 February.

Both games will take place at the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto, as Liverpool Ladies prepare for the 2016 Women’s Super League campaign.

The Liverpool Ladies were originally hoping to play a friendly match against South Africa’s national women's football team, Banyana Banyana but the team was unfortunately unavailable.

Discovery will host the Reds in South Africa in a combined effort to support the funding of the Discovery Fields of Dreams project. This community-based initiative is focused on developing sports facilities in Alexandra in Johannesburg. These facilities will be used to host sports clinics aimed at encouraging the youth to be healthier and more active.

“We are excited that the Reds will be training on South African soil and we look forward to welcoming the coaches and players to the country,” says Iona Maclean, Head of Experiential Marketing at Discovery.
