Celeste Williams, Head of Marketing for Vitality South Africa, says: “The Wanderers Road Race is a celebration of everything Discovery Vitality represents: movement, community, and meaningful change. Whether you're walking your first 5 km or racing a half marathon, you're part of a broader mission. Vitality is a powerful behaviour-change platform designed to inspire and support healthier, longer, and more fulfilling lives.”
Why movement matters
Walking is one of the most accessible and effective ways to ease into regular exercise. According to Mari Leach, Discovery Vitality Biokineticist and Head of Physical Activity:
“Walking is a great low-impact exercise, it helps to boost heart health, supports weight management and strengthens muscles and bones. You can start small, and once you get used to it, challenge yourself to walk faster or further. Soon you'll start enjoying the many health benefits of walking.”
Mari shares these tips for getting started:
1. Find a safe place to walk. Start with your neighborhood or a local park. Group events like parkruns and the Vitality Run Series are great options.
2. Warm up, begin slowly and include light dynamic stretches.
3. Listen to your body and adjust your pace based on how you feel.
4. Walk evenly - if your steps are uneven or you limp, slow down.
5. Cool down - end each session with gentle movement and stretching.
