Discovery Health launches the Discovery Excellence Awards for Nurses
Making a difference to the country’s healthcare system through recognising our nurses
12 May 2014
Today, Discovery Health launched the inaugural Discovery Excellence Awards for Nurses, which will see more than 40 nurses being recognised during the first round of quarterly awards.
“Over the years, Discovery Health has been receiving feedback from its members about the care they’ve received while in hospital, with some of the members taking the time to acknowledge specific nurses who stood out in how they provided nursing care. These awards are about recognising the outstanding effort by these nurses as highlighted by our members”, says Dr Dumani Kula, Head of Hospital Contracting at Discovery Health. “Nursing”, he says, “forms the cornerstone of any healthcare system, and South Africa is experiencing a serious shortage of nurses. This new award has been created to encourage the nursing profession and highlight the important work they do within the healthcare system.”
“The purpose of the awards,” says Dr Kula, “is to reward and enhance nursing excellence and create opportunities for further education and training in the nurses’ areas of nursing expertise. We believe that this will go a long way in strengthening the country’s healthcare system.”
The Quarterly Awards
The quarterly awards for the Discovery Excellence Awards for Nurses are based on Discovery Health members’ feedback on their hospital stay and the nursing care they received. The members’ feedback is obtained through the Discovery Health Member Experience Survey, which is emailed to Discovery Health members who are aged 18 and above after they have been discharged from a hospital admission. The quarterly award winners are selected from the member responses, working together with the hospitals where the nurses are employed.
For the quarterly award, the nurses will receive a cash prize, a gift box and a recognition certificate.
The Annual Awards
The quarterly winners will be invited to go through a judging process with an independent panel of judges drawn from local academic institutions and the South African Nursing Council. The annual winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in November. Winners will be given cash prizes ranging from R50,000 to R100,000, together with an all-expenses paid international learning opportunity at top teaching hospitals in the world.
