Discovery Health and Netcare 911 offer free counselling for Wits staff
The commitment and contribution of Wits staff members during the recent difficult period have been exceptional. Staff did; however, voice the need for counselling following these events. From 15 to 17 November 2016, Wits joined hands with Discovery Health and Netcare 911 to offer free counselling to staff members who indicated a need.
Over the three days, staff members had the benefit of 45-minute counselling sessions with professionals from Netcare 911 and Discovery Health. Group counselling sessions were also available on request. There will be another opportunity to visit a counsellor on 23 November 2016.
This free counselling initiative with support from Discovery Health and Netcare 911, followed from numerous requests made to the Counselling and Careers Development Unit. To address the specific needs of staff members, the Unit worked with Discovery Health and Netcare 911 to offer tailored one-on-one or group counselling sessions for staff members. Being part of the medical scheme is not a requirement and this free counselling is aimed specifically at providing the necessary support to address any adverse impact of activities across campuses over recent weeks.
“It is important to get support to deal with any possible after effects of exposure to traumatic incidents. Discovery Health offers trauma support through trained counsellors, and we gladly extend these services to staff members at Wits who feel they may need it,” said Dr Maurice Goodman, Chief Medical Officer of Discovery Health.
