Discovery joins Gift of the Givers to help the people of Alex
Following torrential downpour and flash floods in and around Johannesburg in recent weeks, the City of Johannesburg reached out to Gift of the Givers to assist them with helping people whose lives have been impacted. The people of Alex, along the Jukskei River, were left with their houses and their lives badly damaged by these flash floods.
A team, led by Ahmed Bham, was assembled to search for two missing people until late at night, while other teams in Alex prepared hot meals and gave blankets to those in need.
“A quick and decisive intervention in any disaster situation is of critical need to save lives. Thanks to our team at Gift, and the generous donation from Discovery Fund, we were able to make a difference, and together we helped more than 2 000 displaced people,” says Badr Kazi, Head of Corporate and Government for Gift of the Givers. “As we continue our efforts to bring relief to these communities, Gift of the Givers is proud to partner the Discovery family.”
Discovery Fund has given an emergency donation of R250 000 to Gift of the Givers to assist them with the disaster relief work that is being done in Alex.
“Whilst the Discovery Fund supports the delivery of primary healthcare services to indigent communities, we felt that it was important to respond to this crisis that has so adversely impacted the lives of those affected by this disaster,” says Ruth Lewin, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Discovery.
During the winter months of 2016, Vitality Active Rewards’ MoveToGive drive partnered with Gift of the Givers to make a donation of winter essentials to those in need.
This month, from 9th – 23 November, Vitality members can contribute to the good work being done by Gift of the Givers by achieving their Active Rewards goal, and donating their reward to the MoveToGive campaign. Vitality will again partner with Gift of the Givers to donate hot meals to the people of Alex who are attempting to restore their lives.
